    such a nice story.

Table 7 – short film from Marko Slavnic on Vimeo.

I love the soft lighting, as the sharpen the character.

everything in the restaurant to look smooth and pretty and everything in the basment to have more of an ominous tone, so the actors in the restuanrant were lit with soft light and everything in the basement was lit with hard light, again an open faced fresnel, but with no bounce, instead pointed directly at the actor to produce high contrast and strong shadows.

Always figure out your key first, use it to light the short side of the face, and then light the background.

Today, under the great help of Robin, we have a common sense of understanding our script and then start to keep going with our folio.

To be a production designer and cinematographer, I am quite nervous about the things we gonna film in this project, we are targeting the detective movies in 1970s, and all the decorations, costuming, make up and style should be referring to 1970s. This is how I did the one-step work

  • Check out the film that robin gave to us: ‘Department S’ this is kind of amazing references that we can look up is that the colourful and fancy wall covering. Considering to the actual place we gonna shoot, the wall is quite blank. We have to use some tactics to cover the wall that would not destroy the wall.

Moreover, it is definitely a good reference in terms of the office decorations.

Bakelite phone, old desk lamp, seal, old newspaper, announcement, place for putting the pen

    Painting

Costuming

Robin says: ” The impeccable and slightly impossible decors; the colour coordinated costuming.  The almost fetishistic attention to current technologies.  Note how offices don’t have white walls – they’re painted solid colours, or have wallpaper!  Consider the non-naturalistic performances.  The mildly absurd scenario treated earnestly, and according to its own totally cohesive set of rules.

The Camera

  • A very nice and moving narrative telling story! love how the sound track follows the story telling and reach up to matrix.

The Camera (short film / original score) from Peter Lewis on Vimeo.

  • This is low budget film and also the first film of Peter (director), the director always wanted to make a film, but was held back by fear of wasting time, people rejecting it, and discouragement if it didn’t work out
He realizes that the problem of designers, filmmakers, writers, etc. is nota lack of ideas, but a lack of execution. He says “fear of wasting my time on something that does not go anywhere. But it is a mistake to think we can figure everything out and then do it right the first time. We learn by doing. So I am learning to do more things, and learn more from the process.”

We are doing a non-budget film now, I can image we are going to encounter many different problems in terms of many unexpected things. I think what I have learned via the director (Peter) in this film is that how to overcome the failure and transform to a inspirational encouragement. Take the step and see what happens. You might not “make it”, bit you will learn something, and that’s worth it.

F stop

the smaller the F stop is, the bigger/widder the opening lens gonna be!!!

if you want more light coming in, you have to maker sure you chose the smaller F stop

f/2= bigger opening (more light coming in)

f/22= smaller opening (less light coming in)

portrait   f=2.5, 3.5, 4.5…… better to choose the smaller f stop, beacuse it makes more focus on the person, background is more blur than the bigger f stop

landscape/ a group of people  f=12. 13.5.14….. better to choose the bigger f stop, beacuse it makes more things in the focus point.

Focal Length Tutorial

Nice video about the focal length tutorial in terms of the wide angle and the telephoto angle.!!!

  • the lower meter number determines the wide vision angle, and the wide vision increases the distance between the object–>wider DOF
  • the telephoto lens has high meter number and creates everything a flatter looks. –>narrower DOF
  • The connection between zoom and focus
In the wide angle view (zoom out all the way), you can turn the focus ring all the way around in wither direction and see every little change in the charity of the image in the viewfinder
In telephoto (zoomed in all the way), you will see that a very slight shot rotation of the focus ring makes a dramatic change to the image and that it will vary from being sharp and clear to being entirely blurry.
In practice, this different means that focusing is far more critical on telephoto than in wide angle.

Robin emphasized the most important part when doing the practical stuff in camera, pretty much just need to handle the most important part such as focal length, depth of filed, exposure and white balance. Those stuff are the most important parts in camera, I think the most important thing is that how you can be creativity of all these stuff. It is totally enough if you can able to get the idea clearly in every individual work. And all the other stuff just does not need to pay much attention on unless you want to expertise on it.

When we were doing the TV project in Broadcast media course, I was the person who operating the camera. This is the first time I really do care and also anxious about this occupation, because the filming is the most important part and it is quite hard for us to reorganize again. Unfortunately I encountered with a lot of problems, such as the over exposure when shooting onside, out of focusing when doing the extreme close up. I admitted that it is the first time to touch the camera stuff, and my group members do trust me when operating the camera. I feel a bit of guilty and we have to drag the timeline for scheduling. Conversely, it is really a good experience for me to learn more about the camera and also keep the faults in mind.

I am making list of the things I have to remember via my experience and the tutorial today

  •  Exposure: using the zebra to adjust the exposure. Around 70%.

If the exposure cannot achieve the view where more than one people in the screening, it is time for lighting adjusting.

Focusing

  • Set up your camera in relation to your subject
  • Zoom in all the way to the eyes or mouths of your subject
  • Turn the focus ring until the image is as clear as possible
  • Zoom out

you will find that the image is correctly focused for every type of shot of that subject

There is a problem I encountered when I shooting a interview when the people’s talking, I was using the close up and then when I using the extreme close up, it is out focus, the main reason is that I move the camera a little bit because of the composition is quite awkward in the scene. I HAVE TO NOTICE IS THAT I HAVE TO REDO THE FOCAL PROCESSING AGAIN, BECAUSE THE CAMERA CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHAT IS BEING CHANGED.

  •     White balance

Using a white paper to adjust the color

If you want to create a different color for the filming, be creativity, using other stuff in different color that you can change the view for that.

In this lecture, there are pretty much knowledge about the camera movement especially focusing more on 180 degree rule which is plays a significant role in a film. I have touched some knowledge about the rule when we were doing the editing media course and broadcast course. Camera movement or angle perspective enables to change the truth or even the actual place.

I learned from the lecture is that 180 degree rule is quite flexibility when you want to across the rule, the point is that you have to show the audience that the camera movement.

The most difficult part in doing the shots is how to figure out which kinds of shots are the important that you have to shoot first. Now our group have not came up with the story idea yet, so for the camera shots, we have a lot of works to do. Actually I am quite excited about how to create the film composition and playing around with the 180 degree rule. All have to do now is to get an idea, and watch some films that gives me the inspiration for the camera movement and angle perspective.
