Last Friday, we had a take home exam. fortunately, I passed in a shameful way beacuse for some questions, I cannot answer it wrongly.

  • what is the minimum distance a light can be placed from a fire sprinkle

              3 metres

there is a lot of water and damage till the fire truck arrives to turn it off

  • what condition should be camera gear be returned in?

            better than you received it

  • If ou are covering, for instance, a dialogue scene between two people, using a shot/reverse shot strategy on each other, how is it best to’cover’ the scene when shooting?

cover the entire scene from both camera angles.

Today, we had a rehearsal in actual filming place. There are two problems we have facing with the rehearsal progress. One is we could not borrow the lighting tools because we were planning to borrow after the tutorial 4:30, but after that it not allows to borrow any equipment. The techs are very kind, and let us to borrow the camera and audio case except the lighting. Without lighting, I am a little bit nervous for the actual filming day. Another problem is that the camera was not able to recording during the rehearsal, it was working fun before that, and we just had no idea what’s going on with it. Therefore, Dinie was using his own camera to shoot the rehearsal.

Generally, we worked quite fluently with the entire scenes and some nicely experiments. I am really glad that we feel much relief and confident to the actual filming. We are so lucky that one of the characters is able to attend rehearsal and doing the filming fluently.  The only problem is that the movement of the camera, the audio and lightings, because we have quite a lot of movements in different places, not like shooting in the studio. Therefore, the most import is that we all should have awareness of organizing the shoots into different parts. This is what we did in the rehearsal.

Filming is next Friday, for me; still have a lot of jobs to achieve.

  • Making Paton’s Files.
  • Find a cloth stand.
  • Making the cookies lighting (make two, for substitute)
  • Lighting movement floor plan based on the rehearsal video.
  • Deeply understand the whole plots.
  • Check out/research the lighting safety issue.

Finally we have a lecture for lighting, as a cinematographer in our TV project, I have gained some lighting knowledge based on the research and films. However, before starting have awareness of lighting, I thought that lighting is just a tool to light some shadow part of characters and make the scene brighter. However, why we have to put the lighting in the first place is not only lighting for something, it is intellectual expressing in the film.

Impose our project into consistent style

• Achieve the separation

Continuity

This is the most crucial factor in lighting; there is no doubt that making a plot can be spend the whole day, and how to make the light exactly the same color as we did before and have a continuity. One scene in different time, lights would change, we have to adjust the lighting. For the spectators, it would be easy for them to keep the continuity when watching the film, but for the people who making the film, how to control the lighting and make it continuity is not an easy thing, especially shooting outside.

Creating the unique personality of characters in some parts.
This is the point that I came up with by myself when I am analyzing the lighting in our project. In our film, I am using the different kinds of lighting to create characters personality.

There are different kinds of lighting resources combination that I didn’t notice before when I am watching the film
• Soft light + fill light
• Soft light without fill light
• Hard light +fill light
• Hard light without fill light.
• Super soft light

I have no complaint about the all the stuff related to production design; I am quite enjoyable for searching and organizing the lighting schedule. This is quite fun experience for me.

To be a production designer, the most important and essential part is to have a visual mind, to transfer the script to a visual thing, I think I am a visual person that I believe in my eyes and appreciate all the wonderful things happened in the world.

At the beginning, I was frustrated about all the props I am going to find. I though it would never be finished and fulfilled because I had no idea about what are the props and costuming in 1970s. Therefore, I have seen some of 1970s films that give a lot of inspiration of the stuff in that period of time. Under the limited budget, I am trying in many ways to get the props I want, I went to the SAVERS, in which displayed a lot of second-hand groceries, furniture and cloths. I found quite related props can be used in our movie. This is just the first step.

In second step, I was looking for stuff in Ebay, I have never used it before that undoubtedly gives me a lot of troublesome. I thought most of the commodities can be bought immediately, but it has to bidding for the specific commodities that takes a long time to bid. Sometimes, you can even get the commodities unless you get higher the bids. At the same time, for the category of ‘buy it now’ all of the commodities are so expensive. In terms of the requirement of typewriter and Bakelite phone, these two commodities cost more than $100. Anyway, it can be a useful experience for me if I need to buy the things in Ebay. Always deserves.

With the fully understand of the script, I am looking for a lot of decorations that can be used in our film. I am getting more awareness of what I am looking for specific decorations via lots of 1970s films.

I think I cannot say that I did a great job in the process of doing folio in pre-production, but I try my best to involve into our project and still need hard working. I have faced with some problems in terms of the unexpected 1970s visual looks and the limited budget. It is quite hard to imagine how the decoration would be effect on the actual office. In regardless of the modernized office, I have quite pressure how to create the atmosphere of 1970s. In my mind, I have to imagine the created atmosphere in   the actual modernized office, especially for the blank wall. It is a big job for me.

I would like to focus more on lighting. Creating more close up show of female close up scene of characters.
