4th Progress

in terms of the presentation, we got some feedback from Brian. we need to visualise more about our research points in the presentation. because it is only 3 minutes, and do not actually have too much time to cover all the research. using diagram and images to catch the audience’s attention would be a good idea.

-Sacrifice information for clarity. Better to sum things up in a few words than have lots of information people will struggle to read with the small time limit.

-Slide map- Have a map of Key theoretical terms we’ve all seen in our papers.

-Where Australia is, media regional player with a diverse set of audiences

-Australia is also a site for more diverse media

-Mainstream US stuff has become richer because of Asian media

-Globalisation causing homogeneity- individual cultural artefacts

-Exert symbolic preference through cultural artefacts preferences between each country.

this book demonstrate the challenge and opportunity for overseas TV prgram in terms of the manipulation of the government, tightening of the regulation in broadcasting TV program and drama, in another way, it clarifies the facr of the rapid development of China TV market ad adoption of the digital and direct satellite technologies that give a great opportunity fro the overseas TV program in terms of the advertising and digital pay TV. it also mentions about the implication of globolization of TV dramas in China. this is useful for my research is because we need to understand what is the challenge for TV drama and program in China, therefore, we can understand how the future trend will be and the solution for the future transnational TV process.

This article demonstrates the idea of the media internationalization in Hong Kong, as the article says ” media internationalization is the process by which the ownership, structure, production, distribution, or content of a country’s media is influenced by foreign media interests, culture and markets” it demonstrates the aspect of Hong Kong ownership matter to foreign. Accessibility of foreign media and also import and export TV programs.

it also demonstrate that the market of Hong Kong is mostly assisted by Taiwan and southeast Asian countries. Hong Kong is attractive to foreign media by the strategic position and also the advanced telecommunications. There is very important point that I can use for our research is that it talks about ” between localization and internationalization are the forces of nationalization and regionalization.” it demonstrates the contrast between the localization and internationalization, it develops the idea of how they consider to be localized or internationalized in terms of the TV programs p223

Kwai-Cheung Lo, 2010, Double Negations: “Hong Kong Cultural Identity in Hollywood Transnational Representations”, Cultural Studies, http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/rcus20

His article clarifies the idea of how Hong Kong productions derternimned by the framwork of the transnational in the perspective of the local social status. it demonstrates that how Hollywood film imitates Hong Kong film as the same time HK film imtiating Hollywood as well. ir presents the idea of how HK cinema still connected to the Chinese cultural symbolic realm. we also understand from the article that there are different ways of how HK cinema transnational happnened in terms of the increasing number of co-production with other countries, migration in seventies, martial arts effects, etc. this article is useful because even though our topic is more focusing on the transnational TV prgram of Asian countries  we also can get the benfits of how the transnational cinema has been successful in Hollywood makets.

This article demonstrates the idea of how historic background as well as the social status influence on viewer’s preference for foreign TV programs. It illustrates the idea of what the relationship between the audience and the using of the satellite broadcast as the way of watching the program from other countries, specially in Japan, and also the cable TV was initially very low to subscribing, so they are using a lot illegal pirated foreign programs. It also clarifies that how important the American and Japanese culture is in Taiwan in terms of the education perspective and also direct colonial rule by Japanese. There is an important point which are useful for my research is that it emphasis on the background factors as well as the social class of the audience affecting the TV viewing. It is useful for my research because it implies the idea of how the audience as a passive, and how they affect on the audience viewing in Taiwan market.

Kwai-Cheung Lo focuses on the transnational culture of Hong Kong. HK has played a major role in the representation of modern popular Chinese culture throughout the world. And also he presents the idea of how HK culture operates as an articulation of “transnational Cheesiness” rather than consciously aiming at a construction of a particular local identity, it states the western representation in HK. And even HK lies precisely in the challenge it poses to China, but also the city is living proof of the aggressive expansion of the Chinese cultural zone “the clash of civilization”. And also he talks about HK as the collaboration of nationalization and globalization. it illustrates that ” HongKong’s transnational culture refers to the cultural impacts of the movement of the Chinese population and capital not only within mainland china but also in other country. This article is useful for my research because we understand the transnational TV mush understand the cultural background of the country or city, and to observe how they integrated with the transnational television in the aspect of culture.

Qiaolei Jiang and Louis Leung, Lifestyle, grafications sought, and narrative appeal: “American and Korean TV drama viewing among Internet users in Urban China”, International Communication Gazette, 2012, http://gaz.sagepub.com/content/74/2/159

In this article, Jiang and Leung analysis the idea of as the stream of TV dramas, not only the changing of the watching habits and cultural interaction, but the convenient devices and technology (internet users). It clarifies the idea like recreational activities and cultural consumption, the burgeoning consumerism and integration into the global economy resembles the process gone through by other Asian countries, and also demonstrate the idea of “lifestyle” in the proliferation of consumerism, individualism and self-reliance. XIAOZI (domestic petit bourgeois) has become the mainstream ideology for Chinese people nowadays. Therefore viewing the foreign Dramas has become the way for enhancing their ability to “modernize” their lifestyle. This article is useful for my research is to show how important the transnational TV drams and programs has been deep into the audience’s life, how important the TV is and also the reason why they are so enjoy viewing the foreign drams or shows without cultural boundaries.

This might be more specific in terms of analysing in different countries, but the problem would be hard to summaries the similarities and differences between each country.

Research #2

Kim Hyun Mee, Korean TV Dramas in Taiwan: “With an Emphasis on the Localization process”http://gsis.korea.ac.kr/file/board_data/mboard/1270967140_3.pdf

Kim Hyun Mee states the idea of how Korean drama affect in Taiwan in terms of the localization process. As we all know that the Korean “pop culture wave” happened in 90s, this phenomenon grabbed the attention of the excitement not only in Korean industry and also the government. And also Kim Hyun Mee analysis that the “simultaneous” Asian culture consumer, in terms of HK, Taiwan, Singapore and Korea, due to the expansion of globalized media such as cable TV, satellite, and the internet. The broadcast station catches up with the opportunities of “Korean wave” and they imported a lot of Korean dramas and also the soundtracks from original Korean drams and insert Taiwanese songs instead. It also clarifies the idea of Korean drams are not considered “perfect: cultural products and are being distributed throughout Taiwan in a hybrid form that is the Taiwanese adaptation of Korean dramas.

This research is important for my research that we understanding that the certain culture wave in Korea works in the way not only in music, but also the TV programs, and also understanding that how the broadcast station grab the opportunity and how they process in localization.
