Media industry course has expanded into out reality working. Research is the most important part in media industry. If we cannot grab the most important information or trends in nowadays, we cannot say we are media maker. Everything in media industry has a lot of things need to research on. We can deny that everything comes from the society. Everything based on researching. In this course, I found out a lot of my media friends are really not keen on researching, including me.  We might feel like it is most tedious things ever, it absolutely not the process of filming. However, I finally understood through the process of the class. We cannot leave without research. In the future career, if we wanna be a producer, we have tones of researching in terms of the analysis of the situation in different things. We need to know the deeper understanding through the academic and convincible proof. If we don’t have enough research for the current media industry, we cannot know anything about it but only an empty mind.

This is the final year. I might need to go back home since if finished my study. In the holiday, I am planning to do some researches on the connection between Australia and China in terms of the co-production filming company, media companies and also the advertising. I might focus more on:

  •  what successful elements in co-production cooperation. research on the successful production company.
  • analysis on what kind of predictable television program might be successful in Australia from Chinese television program, and also China get the idea from Australia.
  • Analysis in terms of the culture identity between two countries.
  • future trends

There are more points will be came up with in the research, and then I will also make a website for my research. basically will be two version in Chinese and English.

Strategies

Initially, we thought that might be good to have some interviewing part in our research , might be more convincible. Dr Fran Martin at The University Of Melbourne who is a lecturer of cultural studies would be a good start to discuss about our research and share her expert knowledge on television, film, literature and other forms of cultural production in contemporary transnational China (The People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong), with a specialization in transnational flows and representations and cultures of gender and sexuality.

Also, there was a seminar called “Not Just K-Pop“ on April, 26th at North Melbourne Town Hall, hosted by the NYID (Not Yet It’s Difficult) company. This seminar covered an insight into one of the most dynamic and sustained cultural explosions in Korea, Hallyu, and asked some pertinent questions. Why and how did it happen? How have the dynamics of popular culture shifted in the region? How have these dynamics been mediated by social media and youth culture? how is Korean contemporary culture going global affecting their local and international arts scene?..etc

Finally, we thought that we might keep the interest to the audience. we will make up four mash up videos from different countries, we will show that what kind of style belongs to this country, that might be more interesting for the audience in terms of boring reading through the research. we will put out research link in four separate videos. firstly we will let them have a brief idea about what the television program looks like, and then start to read our research.we all think it is a good idea in terms of not losing the interest to the audience but also they also can learned from the our research.

We found out it is very important to clarify the idea we are researching on, the problem we are facing with is the even though it is a good idea to separate different countries to analysis, but the problem is that we don’t actually have some connection between us. Each member only doing their own part but have no idea about what other people research on. It is not a good idea for a group project. Therefore, we will post the bullet points of main ideas, or research questions on facebook group to make sure we are all in a right track and it might be good for our research area.

There is another point is about my research. I am bit struggling with the case study I am focusing on. I have already done a lot of research about STAR TV and TVB; there are a lot of points that I can focus on. But in terms of the specific drama, I was thinking for a long time, because I wanna express the idea of how star TV and TVB has influenced on Hong Kong television program. This is my research question. Personally speaking, I know that TVB has a strong market because of their television drama has made a lot of effects on Mainland China. Therefore. I am thinking to use a ancient costume drama serials to identify that How Hong Kong television channels wanna get more benefits from the point of the huge market in mainland china. However, they didn’t completely imitate the model from mainland china, but have developed the costume serials in their own way. I think it can identify as a transnational case study.

4th Progress

in terms of the presentation, we got some feedback from Brian. we need to visualise more about our research points in the presentation. because it is only 3 minutes, and do not actually have too much time to cover all the research. using diagram and images to catch the audience’s attention would be a good idea.

-Sacrifice information for clarity. Better to sum things up in a few words than have lots of information people will struggle to read with the small time limit.

-Slide map- Have a map of Key theoretical terms we’ve all seen in our papers.

-Mainstream US stuff has become richer because of Asian media

-Globalisation causing homogeneity- individual cultural artefacts

-Exert symbolic preference through cultural artefacts preferences between each country.

it also demonstrate that the market of Hong Kong is mostly assisted by Taiwan and southeast Asian countries. Hong Kong is attractive to foreign media by the strategic position and also the advanced telecommunications. His article clarifies the idea of how Hong Kong productions derternimned by the framwork of the transnational in the perspective of the local social status. it demonstrates that how Hollywood film imitates Hong Kong film as the same time HK film imtiating Hollywood as well. ir presents the idea of how HK cinema still connected to the Chinese cultural symbolic realm. we also understand from the article that there are different ways of how HK cinema transnational happnened in terms of the increasing number of co-production with other countries, migration in seventies, martial arts effects, etc. this article is useful because even though our topic is more focusing on the transnational TV prgram of Asian countries  we also can get the benfits of how the transnational cinema has been successful in Hollywood makets.

This article demonstrates the idea of how historic background as well as the social status influence on viewer’s preference for foreign TV programs. It illustrates the idea of what the relationship between the audience and the using of the satellite broadcast as the way of watching the program from other countries, specially in Japan, and also the cable TV was initially very low to subscribing, so they are using a lot illegal pirated foreign programs. It also clarifies that how important the American and Japanese culture is in Taiwan in terms of the education perspective and also direct colonial rule by Japanese. There is an important point which are useful for my research is that it emphasis on the background factors as well as the social class of the audience affecting the TV viewing. It is useful for my research because it implies the idea of how the audience as a passive, and how they affect on the audience viewing in Taiwan market.

Kwai-Cheung Lo focuses on the transnational culture of Hong Kong. HK has played a major role in the representation of modern popular Chinese culture throughout the world. And also he presents the idea of how HK culture operates as an articulation of “transnational Cheesiness” rather than consciously aiming at a construction of a particular local identity, it states the western representation in HK. And even HK lies precisely in the challenge it poses to China, but also the city is living proof of the aggressive expansion of the Chinese cultural zone “the clash of civilization”. And also he talks about HK as the collaboration of nationalization and globalization. it illustrates that ” HongKong’s transnational culture refers to the cultural impacts of the movement of the Chinese population and capital not only within mainland china but also in other country. This article is useful for my research because we understand the transnational TV mush understand the cultural background of the country or city, and to observe how they integrated with the transnational television in the aspect of culture.
