–user-generated media (UGM)  have become a social phenomenon. It assumes that the audiences consciously choose from the medium that could fulfil their needs and that they are able to recognise their reasons for making media choices.

–UGM is considered one of the most appropriate perspective for the investigating  why audiences choose to deal with different media channels.

this essay illustrated why and how people use UGM.

individuals Consuming: refers to the individual who only watch, or view but never participate (purpose  for entertainment and information)–information seeking is driven by people’s desire to increase awareness and knowledge of one’s self and the world.  most of people are seeking the information as the way of entertainment, escaping the problems, getting aesthetics enjoyment, filling the time and emotional relaxing. 

Personally speaking, i think most of us is still in the level of consumption, we would like to seek the information from different social networking sites, like google, wikipedia. especially the wikipedia. i define its the fully information place to collect the knowledge, because it has so many information and links to other knowledge that come from the different field of expertises. But for the academic in the university, wikipedia seems not to be a good research engine, because the information is not very academic that can be researched. The same as the YouTube, there are so many resources and materials in terms of entertainment, education, sports, arts and so one. In the videos, that it causes the materials is so mess up and just for looking, not academic. Like in the reading says “snack food”

Participating: user-to-user interaction and user-to-content interaction  (purpose for social interaction and community development)  people will save the their favourites, share with others, post comments, etc.  Interacting with each other through email, instant message, chat room and other internet venus.  like email, internet web, Facebook.and many other social networks. 

Personally speaking, all of us in nowadays will have some of the social networking sites that easily communicate with friends and peers. It has became the most popular and worldwide ways of communicating. We have interaction with people who has the same interest and goals, we will share the things that we would like from our friends, and so on. it is easy to share, talk and comment on someone’s sharing or stuff. I like commenting on my friends’ photos, status, and activities, i think it is still just a level of entertainment, the only reason why its more interactive than the consuming is that you actually participate inside and think about what you are going to involved.

Producing: encompass creation and publication of one’s personal contents such as text, image, audio, and video. (purpose for self expression and self actualisation) editing movies, music and photos.

This is the level we have to achieve as the media maker. I am also making the film and photos and then put in the VIMEO and other social networking sites that sharing with my friends, It fulfils my self-satisfaction and actually realize i am able to elaborate the theory with practise. However,  my works still limited  in the cage of the non-professional fields. I cannot get the professional response from my friends. This is the stage I would like to across over.

“easy to use enables users to input very little, but output for users may come in abundance. “easy to use” UGM let users be in control, unders control what they want, when they want and where they want. on other world, users are not constrained by the computer systems” 

It reflects to the course I have learned in last sem, called communication and technologies. the whole essential part we have learned is that the technology determinism. the technology is not going to change by themselves, and also there is nothing cause by the technology, the only way to change is the way of people’s thoughts. We have ability to change the way of using internet, but the internet cannot change it for us. Therefore, the essay states that nowadays, the social networking site is pretty easily accepted by most people, the point is that how you can manipulate your own sites and enhances people’s gratifications.
